Nature of Africa

A rainbow flashes across a storm-drenched sky over Kagga Kamma… An early morning mist shrouds a line of Mozambican women… A languid, elegant leopard strolls over the hot, dry sands Kgalagadi Trans Frontier Park… A statuesque Goliath Heron is etched on a gun-metal grey sky…

These are a few of the evocative images of Africa’s birds and mammals, people and places in Tim Gibson photographic exhibition now on at the Avondale Estate. Tim’s life-long love of Nature and travel in Africa are clearly evident in this collection of 18 peacefully composed, artfully balanced and expertly photographed images. The works range in price from R850 to R950 per piece.

Tim photographed many of the works on this show during an epic 12 600 kilometre journey that started in Cape Town and ranged through South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi and Botswana.

This year, Avondale’s Créche and After Care Centre entered the annual school’s Collect-A-Can competition, and all the children took up the challenge with great enthusiasm, and results. They won R1000 in prize money for the school when they were placed third in the competition! It was an extraordinary achievement for a small farm school, and teacher, Nadia Retief says, “We will definitely be entering again in the years to come. It has been great because now that the parents have seen what can be achieved they are much more aware and willing to recycle their cans!”

Nadia has bought paint and other materials for the school with some of the prize money, and she is planning to treat our recycling champs to a Poppekas Puppet Show. Well done to them for doing their bit to take care of the Earth!

The children also had great fun exercising their ingenuity in the creation of these wonderful scarecrows out of waste materials which will be used to help protect the Avondale Community Food Garden!

It’s Summer, it’s the festive season – the perfect time to be popping the corks of the bottles of bubbly! Armilla, Avondale’s traditionally-made Methodé Cap Classique (MCC) embodies our celebration of life on the farm. Sparkling with joy, this fresh, versatile Brut is full of the verve that comes from Avondale’s holistic way of making delicious, natural wines. Armilla bears Avondale’s logo as its emblem – a rendition of the Armillary sphere, an ancient astronomical instrument used to show the position of stars around the earth. It represents Avondale’s BioLOGIC® approach to life on our farm where, from the minerals in the soil to the stars in the skies, all is combined in an energised, living system. We make Armilla from Chardonnay grapes from 8 to 20 year old organically-grown vines that have a low yield of 6 to 8 ton of healthy, balanced fruit. It is a premium quality MCC, vibrant with flavours of apple pie and biscuit, with a touch of lemon zest and honey. Armilla has a superb integration of acidity which allows for a dry and complex palate that is full of freshness and elegance. You can be sure, that we will be raising our glasses of Armilla in celebration of the year past, and to welcome the year ahead. And when we do, we will also make a mindful toast to all of you who will be enjoying Avondale’s extraordinary wines!
