Meeting the challenges of monoculture
Avondale currently has 70 hectares of land planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Rousanne and Chardonnay vines.

Certified organic – All 70 hectares are certified organic by the Dutch-based Control Union, one of Europe’s leading certification authorities.  This provides accreditation to the German Bio Nach EG-Öko Verordnung, Britain’s Soil Association, and the USDA certification in the United States of America.

Working with Nature – At Avondale we have joined forces with Nature to help mitigate the impact of monoculture on the environment.  We are constantly learning from Nature and emulating its ways of sustaining an ecosystem to the advantage of our vines.

This includes:

  • Building soil fertility
  • Cleansing water
  • Promoting biodiversity
  • Using the services of natural predators
  • Communicating in the ecosystem
  • Connecting to the energy of place

We find our rewards for this in our yields of premium quality grapes that are full of delicious, natural flavour.  This enables us to make our great-tasting wines naturally with no artificial additives required to alter a wine compromised by the poor farming of the grapes.

I thought the Avondale MCC was wonderful – I particularly loved its biscuity flavour. I was enchanted by the cosmology that has been created for the whole range, which carries Avondale’s organic and biodynamic farming methods into the branding. It’s a new favourite!
