There is a wonderfully magic feeling about cold wintry nights, roaring fires and fine wine.
Combine that with a new moon, delicious food and the perfectly crafted words of two well known local authors and these are the ingredients for an extraordinary evening. The next “Culinary Innovations” evening at the Grande Roche Hotel on Friday July 20 has all this and more. Expect a deliciously cosy winter evening at the famous Bosman’s Restaurant as novelist, poet and author of children’s books, Patricia Schonstein with her husband, well known travel journalist Don Pinnock, meet their matches with the award winning wines of Avondale and the culinary alchemy of Chef Roland.
Guests will be taken on a magical journey that encompasses the novels that has seen Patricia hailed as a foremost writer of magical – realism. Her novels are set, mostly in Long Street, Cape Town with her characters variously dining at sumptuous tables, drinking wine, gambling or acting out tense dramas.
Don, as travel writer extraordinaire, shares his various adventures which will capture everyone’s imagination. Add the crafting of Avondale’s Proprietor Johnathan Grieve with the culinary genius of Chef Roland – and a host of sensory experiences awaits you at the most hospitable and historic hotel in Paarl.
Just as Patricia’s fictions are rich in sensuality, fabrics, works of art and delicious food, so too will you find those qualities in Avondale’s range of nature-friendly wines. Avondale’s wines are handcrafted according to the BioLOGIC® methodology- a unique approach to wine making that incorporates organic and biodynamic principles with the best technologies that modern science has to offer.
There is a theory that the moon and planetary cycles influence the way we enjoy wine and according to the lunar calendar, there are four specific cycles; namely fruit, root, flower and leaf. During the evening the winemaker will discuss the “leaf” phase which coincides with the function date. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy Armilla – an effervescent Méthode Cap Classique; Anima – a vibrant Chenin Blanc; Samsara – a spicy Syrah and Avondale’s red blend, ‘La Luna’…and since it will also be the new moon, perhaps a little magic will ensue!
Conjuring up dishes to complement the wine is also a magical art and guests are assured of an evening that will speak of flavour, sensuality and the tapestry of travel, magic and wintry nights. The Grande Roche Hotel is known for its innovation and service and reserving a place at this table is the promise of a treat. Words, wine and wonderful food over wintry nights have never been more accessible.
