Description

Avondale is the first in South Africa to utilise Qvevri in our winemaking. These ancient clay vessels from the country Georgia dating back over 8000 years allows the wine to breathe as it ferments and as it ages in the clay brings a beautiful brightness of fruit and minerality to the wine.
The Qvevri fits into Avondale’s slow winemaking philosophy and in this light characterful wine you will experience the unbridled grape flavour of our wines.

VINEYARDS: 10 to 35 year old vines, cultivated organically. The vines yielded between 4 and 8 tons per hectare.

GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Chenin Blanc

WINEMAKING: The grapes were picked between 22° and 23 °B. 40% of the grapes were whole bunch pressed, juice fermented and left to age on primary lees in Qvevri.30% were destemmend, naturally fermented and aged on skins for 3 months, after this it was pressed and went back into Qvevri to age on lees.Another 30% were whole bunch fermented and aged on stems/skins for 4 months, after this it was pressed and went back into Qvevri to age on lees
All 3 components where taken out of Qvevri in Feb 2019 after more and less a year in Qvevri, blended and bottled.

CORNé SAYS: Pure clean fruit with unmistakable minerality /earthiness from the Qvevri on the nose.
A bright and lively natural acidity which is well integrated and gives great length to the wine.
Yellow peach, pear, pineapple and lime on the palate, with white pepper and spice from the whole bunch with earthiness. Whole bunch gives the elegant tannin structure/ Skin ferment gives the full palate and juice ferment gives overall fruitiness. This combined with the earthiness/minerality of the Qvevri makes a complete wine.
Serve chilled and enjoy with friends!

AGEING: Enjoy immediately but it will definitely enhance your cellar should you wish to lay it down for four years.
